Abstract The crab species Uca arcuata and Uca lactea are listed as "Rare" in the "Endangered Species of Japan(Red Data Book)" published by the Environment Agency of Japan (1991). In the Yoshino River Estuary and vicinity, concentrated populations of both species remain; moreover, both are distributed over a wide area. Surveys to determine the density of active individuals were performed in the brackish water region of the Yoshino River estuary from the rivermouth up to the Daiju-seki fixed rock barrier 14.5 kilometers upstream, and habitation of Uca arcuata was confirmed up to the 10.5 km point. Also, within Tokushima prefecture, the presence of both species was confirmed at the Katsu-ura River and the Naka River, and Uca arcuata at the Sonose River. It was interesting that the results showed spatial distribution patterns for populations of both species in estuaries containing tidal mudflats.
